Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I am interested in participating. How do I sign up?
A: You can sign up online by clicking on Participate (located on the left). You can also call us at 607-777-6225 or mail in the reply card in the information packet you received.
Q: How old does my baby or child have to be?
A: We recommend that you sign up as soon as possible. We will contact you when your child reaches the right age for one of our studies. The exact age depends on the study. Normally, we work with ages between 3 months and 7 years.
Q: Will I be compensated for my travel expenses?
A: Yes. We offer $10 cash to parents for each visit to the University. Parents who have to travel more than 30 miles (one way) will be offered more compensation -- please contact us for details.
Q: What happens during a typical study?
A: Your baby or child will be looking at objects on a computer screen while we observe their behavior. A typical study session takes about 10-30 minutes.
Q: I work during the day. Are there appointments available on nights or weekends?
A: Yes. We are happy to schedule evening and weekend appointments for the busiest parents.
Q: Can I watch while my child is being observed?
A: Yes. Your baby or child does best when you are around. In fact, we need you to be nearby in almost all of our studies.
Q: Where do the studies take place?
A: Some studies take place in your home; other studies take place at our easy-to-find location on campus. You can choose to participate in the study that is best for you.
Q: Is there parking on campus?
A: Yes. We will reserve a parking spot for your visit. See our Directions Page (located on the left) for details.
Q: I would like to come to campus for one of the studies. Can I bring my other children along?
A: Yes. Just be sure to mention to one of our assistants that you will be bringing other children. We will make sure that someone is available to watch your other children.
Q: How did you get my name and address?
A: We got your name from either the birth announcements in a local newspaper or from a mailing list to which we subscribe.
Q: How will my baby or child or I benefit from the studies?
A: Many parents find our studies to be interesting and informative. Many children also find our studies to be fun as well. Most importantly, you will be helping the scientific community understand the minds of infants and young children.
