     We are an international group of historians of the United States who organized a three-day conference-workshop entitled "Competing Kingdoms: Women, Mission, Nation, and American Empire, 1812-1930." The conference took place at the University of Oxford, England from April 27 to 29, 2006 and was organized through the Rothermere American Institute at the University of Oxford, the Center for the Historical Study of Women and Gender at the State University of New York at Binghamton, and Tokyo Woman's Christian University.
