The continuing education and outreach program of the Center
for Integrated Watershed Studies at Binghamton University
offers public lectures, seminars, invited speaker sessions,
and conferences for academics, practicing professionals,
community members, as well as community leaders on a wide
variety of watershed-related topics, such as:
· Stream management and restoration
· Community land use planning and design
· GIS applications for watershed planning and management
· Non-profit organizational development and fiscal administration
· Legal and institutional aspects
· Water quality management for rural and urban watersheds
· Natural processes in watersheds (e.g. hydrology, ecology)
· Wetland restoration and design
Specific
outreach activities of CIWS include support and/or participation
in:
· Susquehanna River and Road-side Clean-up
·
Coaching for the ‘Odyssey of Mind’ and ‘Science
Olympiad’ programs in public schools
· Conservation Action Commission for the City of Binghamton
· Town of Vestal Conservation Advisory Committee
· Town of Vestal Comprehensive Planning Committee
· Institute of Student-Centered Learning, SUNY-Binghamton
· Friends of the Nature Preserve
There are also several opportunities for internships and
public volunteers in CIWS projects, including data collection
in the laboratory and at various regional field sites,
participation in clean up and trail maintenance, leading educational walks,
etc.
