- Come to the office and pick up an application and
NSE Directory. This booklet has a great deal of information about
the participating schools, payment plans, cost, policies, population
and enrollment figures, ethnic diversity of schools and much more.
Please read through this book carefully. Also go to the national NSE
website for more information on general exchange
policies.
-
Once you have looked through the
directory, make an appointment with the Coordinator, Birgit Nicolaisen,
to discuss any questions or concerns you might have. She will go
over the application process with you and discuss your choices for
exchange. For many schools there is the option of paying through
Plan A (the host school's in-state tuition and fees) or Plan B (Binghamton's
tuition and fees). There are some restrictions regarding chance
of placement at your host school and how any financial aid you receive
at BU may or may not transfer to the host school. Please make sure
you investigate your choice of payment plan thoroughly before making
any decisions.
- Complete the application, essay, and pay the application
fee. The placement conference, where most placements are made, is
in early March. For the best chance to get your first choice of exchange,
please submit your application packet by February 15th. Applications
will still be accepted after that date, but placement may be delayed
and school selection may be more limited.
-
After the placement conference, the
Binghamton coordinator will contact you to let you know the results
of your request. If you were accepted by a school, you must come
to the NSE office and complete a placement acceptance form. If you
decide to decline the placement, you must still complete the form
and indicate your reason for declining. If you apply after the February
deadline, the Binghamton coordinator will need to check on a case
by case basis to see if there are any spaces available.
-
After the host coordinator has received
your placement acceptance form, they will send you more information
on housing, course registration, etc.
-
Make an appointment with the appropriate
academic advising office to discuss your course choices. Pleaes
be prepared to be flexible with course selection. Classes taken
at your host school will be considered as transfer credit upon
your return to Binghamton. In order to avoid any surprises, we
strongly recommend that you get approval from your academic advising
office here at BU for courses you plan to take at your host school.
Every school registers their incoming NSE students differently
for classes and housing. Once placement has been made and you
have officially accepted your placement, the host school coordinator
will contact you with more information. You can find each school's
website through the national
NSE website.
- If you will be applying for financial aid at your
host school, you must ensure that both the Binghamton code and the
host school code appear on your FAFSA form. The codes are listed in
the NSE directory. If you have already filed a FAFSA form without
the host school code, you must submit a revised form. If the host
school is not listed on your FAFSA form they cannot access your financial
information. If you will be applying for financial aid through Binghamton,
please get in touch with the financial aid office to work out any
necessary details.
- When you arrive at your host school, please contact
the host NSE coordinator there AND the Binghamton NSE coordinator
with your host campus address and phone number (by e-mail is fine
for me). At some point during the semester, please send a postcard
of the host school or local scenery to the Binghamton NSE office for
display purposes.
- During your time away, please let the Binghamton
NSE office know if your e-mail address changes. We keep in contact
with outgoing students by e-mail because it is much quicker and more
efficient than regular (snail) mail.
- Remember to send an official transcript from your
host school to the appropriate academic advising office (Harpur, SOM,
Watson, DSON, or CCPA) at Binghamton.
- If you are returning to Binghamton after your exchange,
you will advance register for courses during early registration as
usual. If you have trouble accessing the registration system, please
contact me and I will help you out. You will need to give me a specific
schedule of classes with courses numbers, sections, labs, etc. so
I have all the details I need to assist you in the registration process.
- Have a marvelous time!
