A Beginner’s Guide to the Internet and the World Wide Web

Objectives:

This course is an introduction to the use and practices of the Internet and World Wide Web. Some general areas of study will include:

 
  1. How to access the Internet and WWW
  2. Software requirements
  3. Hardware requirements
  4. Search techniques
  5. Advantages and disadvantages
 
Attendance:

Attendance is expected as part of each student's responsibility for his/her own education. Each student's academic achievement will determine the course grade and not just the statistics of presence or absence. Each student is responsible for any work missed regardless of the reason for any absence in class.

 
Assignments:

For the first week, assignments must be typed using a word processor. The following is required:

  • The font size MUST be 12pt or larger
  • Your name and class with section number MUST appear in the header. Format: CST 135-##

  • The page number where the questions are located MUST appear at the top of each section of answers

  • Answers MUST be clearly identified by their question number

From the second week on, assignments must be emailed. The following is required:

  • The assignment’s Week # and assignment type MUST appear in the Subject line. This is the week the work was assigned. Format: Week #-Text Question or Week #-HTML (depending on what is being emailed)

  • Your name MUST appear on the first line in the body of the email
  • Your class with section number MUST appear on the second line in the body of the email. Format: CST 135-##

  • The page number where the questions are located MUST appear at the top of each section of answers

  • Answers MUST be clearly identified by their question number
  • Answers to text questions MUST be entered into the body of the email
  • HTML assignments MUST be sent as attachments
 
Late Policy:

Each student is expected to complete the assignments in a timely fashion. An assignment more than one week late will NOT be accepted and a grade of zero will be recorded. You will lose the following percentages for late assignments:

8 Days and after 100%
 
Exams:

There is an exam every week. If a student will miss a scheduled exam, the instructor must be notified prior to the exam by telephoning the instructor or the Computer Studies Office and have a valid reason for missing the exam. If no notification is received by the time of the exam, it cannot be made up. The instructor solely determines validity.
