FINAL
EXAM
You will answer each
of the following questions with an essay.
Remember that this is an essay and as such should have a clear
statement
of thesis, an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Your answers
should be
double-spaced in a 12 point font, and each answer may be no more
than
1,200 words. You will submit the exam electronically via Brightspace/Turnitin and in hardcopy.
I will expect you to cite class readings in both papers as
appropriate. Citations do not count towards the word count. You should not, however,
do additional readings or research to answer the questions. Please focus your efforts on arguments, material and information presented in this class. You will not find the answer to the question by googling web pages. Always remember that in any exam or essay we will be evaluating you in terms of two major criteria: (1) how well you answer the questions and (2) have you done the work of the class. Using Professor Google will probably confuse criteria one and will not demonstrate your completion of criteria two. If you copy material from the web, you will be charged with plagerism, you will reieve an F in the class and you will be taken before the university honesty committee.
1. We
have seen a series of popular Hollywood
movies in the class. Based on these
films you are to write an essay that critically evaluate how Hollywood portrays Native
Americans. Your discussion should
include the following issues. How have
the movies stereotyped Native Americans and why is it important to
confront
these stereotypes? What are the
standard stereotypes about Native Americans and why are they inaccurate? How have these stereotypes changed or not
changed over time and why? Do these
stereotypes affect the lives of Indian People, and if so, how? Why do Hollywood movies use these
stereotypes, and realistically, can they be changed: if so how? Your analysis should include specific
references to the movies we have seen in class.

2. Sovereignty
is the key issue in Native
America today. In the last few years
there has been a growing backlash to Native American sovereignty. Critiques of Native American sovereignty
argue that it is based on romanticized notions of Native Americans and
that it
has gone to far. They argue that Native
American sovereignty puts too much power, with too few checks and
balances, in
the hands of inexperienced Indian leaders.
They further argue that sovereign Native American nations
frequently
trample the rights of both Native Americans and other US citizens. Has
Native
American Sovereignty gone to far?
Formulate a position of you own about Native American
sovereignty. Use the material presented in
class, in
readings, and in your own research, to argue your
own
position. Be sure to demonstrate a good
understanding of the current realities of Native American sovereignty,
and how
sovereignty plays out in terms of issues like civil rights, gambling,
land
claims, resources, identity, and education.
