  1. A flotation machine separates heavy and light material from the surrounding dirt/mud by using water. Artifacts recovered in the heavy fraction include small fragments of lithics, ceramics, beads, metal, bone, plastic etc. Artifacts present in the light fraction can include plant material, seeds, carbonized remains, pollen, textiles etc.
