Assignments due by beginning of class on indicated days. Schedule subject to change at
instructor's discretion.
Introduction to class, no assignment |
First thing. Send me an email @ ascholtz@binghamton.edu to tell me about yourself:
- What pronouns you prefer
- What year you are in and (not unrelated!) the year and semester you're expecting to graduate
- What you're majoring in or are thinking thinking about majoring in
- What draws you to the study of ancient Greek, how it fits into your larger academic or life program
Second thing. ATHENAZE BOOK 1. Review assignment: Read and prepare for class the Chapter 15 (CH15) BETA-READING (β-reading), pp. 300-302, just lines 1-30. . .
- No writing this time, but,
- Be ready to say out loud the Greek. Be careful which syllable you accent — practice this at home! Always do this for all the Greek that you work with FOR CLASS.
- Pronunciation is covered in the beginning of Athenaze book 1. You'll find I tend to use a fairly rigorous, albeit speculative, reconstruction of classical Attic pronunciation, with musical more than stress accent, etc. etc. I don't require that of you, just consistency, that's all. Modern Greek pronunciation is perfectly acceptable, though you may find me supplying the classical Attic version of that, not to correct but so folks with no Modern Greek can understand. Musical accent isn't required, either. Stress is fine, but misplacement of the accent is not.
- To the best of your ability, be ready to help us with translation of the text and with
- Vocabulary
- Grammar =
- Morphology (word forms: tense, mood, person, number, etc.; case, number, gender, etc.)
- Syntax (grammatical constructions, how words go together)
- Be ready to suggest and to discuss points in the text that arouse interest or that cause difficulty. Always do this for all assignments
|
Continue with the CH15 β-reading review, lines 1-30. Please re-review those lines as per 23-Aug assignment |
CH16 ALPHA SECTION
- STUDY ch16-alpha handout
- READ-STUDY text pp. 312-314 on grammar: present and imperfect indic. passive voice
- NEW MORPHOLOGY. Study and get a good start on internalizing sect. 2 (pp. 1-2) of ch16-alpha handout for all PRESENT (indicative, infinitive, imperative, participle) and IMPERFECT (indicative), BUT NOT AORIST, middle/passive forms:
- λύομαι (regular omega verbs)
- ποιοῦμαι (ποιέομαι, epsilon-contract)
- τιμῶμαι (τιμάομαι, alpha-contract)
- δηλοῦμαι (δηλόομαι, omicron-contract)
- WRITE 16-β 1-4. 16-γ 1-3 (both Eng-to-Grk and Grk-to-Eng)
- Note that when writing Eng-to-Grk translations, do very much include breathings! Do not, however, include accents — not unless you know you're following accent rules to a "T." We'll talk about accents in class, they're a journey. In general, guesswork is a valid quiz/exam-taking strategy. It is not a learning strategy. When doing assignments, do the work, look it up.
